About

I am a sociologist and postdoc at the Chair of General Sociology, University of Basel. My work covers social theory and theory of society, cultural sociology, the sociology of violence and victimhood, interpretive social research and historical sociology.

I received my doctorate from the University of Oldenburg in 2024 with an ethnographic study of the German New Right movement (summa cum laude). The book was published open access by Velbrück Wissenschaft in 2025 as Die leidende Gemeinschaft des Volkes (The Suffering Community of the People). In 2026 I received the Early Career Award of the Social Theory Section of the German Sociological Association.

I studied history, philosophy and interdisciplinary anthropology at the University of Freiburg.

Research

I combine theory of society with interpretive empirical research. Methodologically, my work draws on ethnography, narrative interviews, grounded theory, the documentary method and discourse analysis.

The New Right movement: community, victimhood and violence

Based on ethnographic fieldwork, my monograph Die leidende Gemeinschaft des Volkes (2025) reconstructs how the German New Right movement forms a community around shared experiences of injury and victimhood. The study combines a dense empirical reconstruction of community-building, violence and victimhood with its interpretation in terms of a theory of society. In subsequent work I examine the movement’s competing normative orders, sacralisation and collective effervescence, and the methodological and ethical problems of research in normatively charged fields.

Sociology of violence

Together with colleagues at Gesa Lindemann’s chair in Oldenburg, I have worked out a reflexive concept of violence in methodological terms: as a coding scheme for the qualitative reconstruction of violence that draws on the phenomenology of the lived body (2021), and as an argument for systematically linking micro-analytical reconstruction with reflection grounded in a theory of society (2022). My more recent contributions address the relation between immediacy and mediation in violence and the debate on reflexive research on violence.

Theory of society and qualitative research

Cutting across these fields is the question of how theory of society and qualitative social research can inform each other, for instance in the documentary method with recourse to Karl Mannheim, or in research on normatively charged fields. On this relationship I co-organised an ad hoc group at the 2025 DGS Congress and a joint session of the Social Theory and Qualitative Methods sections at the 2026 Congress.
